加拿大皇桥教育集团和加拿大Abbotsford教育局联合开发的教学项目。加拿大使用两种官方语言，因此，国际学生来加拿大学习英语作为第二语言(ESL)或法语作为第二语言(FSL)都可。 ESL英语是国际学生进入北美大学必修的语言课程，是世界公认的语言课程，ESL为学生提供以交流的方式学习英语的机会。 许多人选择到加拿大学习英语作为第二语言是因为加拿大有众多优秀的英语语言学校。因为为数众多的新移民需要学习英语，因此，这些年来，加拿大培养出了相当数量的一批ESL专业教师。在语言学校，国际学生可以学习综合英语、商务英语或专门用途英语。有时候单门选修的英语课需要1000多加元的学费，几乎所有的大学和社区学院都开设ESL课程。ESL英语课程以加拿大公立学校教学大纲为蓝本，使母语为非英语的学生在英语听说读写等方面达到加拿大本地高中学生同等水平，使非英语国家学生迅速与北美大学课程接轨，ESL学生班分为四个层次12级别，学生在入学前先接受测试以便确定其英语程度，再选择适合自己程度的班级。各级的学生在每一期的学习结束进行考试，达到标准后再升到下一级。并获得该级别的国际认证的合格证书。所以一般来说，大多数ESL学校的入学要求和入学时间都很灵活。

ESL并不是必修课程。如果有了托福和雅思成绩【基本托福90-100以上，雅思6.5级以上】起码在加拿大就不需要上ESL了。但是相对来说ESL更容易让人接受，因为比较托福雅思简单得多。

在美国，虽然移民政策比较严格，但是每年还是有许多学生跟随父母来到美国学习，另外，美国教育举世闻名，吸引着无数的学生前往美国学校就读。可是这些学生在刚刚进入美国学校时，很难与英语母语的学生一样上同样的英语课程，因此专门针对国际学生和移民学生开设ESL课程也就显得非常必要了。

不过，所有打算进入大学的高中国际学生，如果没有托福和雅思等官方认可的合格的英语考试成绩，均需参加ESL考试，并取得合格的ESL成绩，否则不能进入大学学习专业课程。ESL考试分为听说读写四部分，考试时间分别为：听力30分钟、阅读90分钟、写作60分钟、口语11~15分钟。ESL考试根据分数的不同会评定出不同的级别，91~100分是最高级5级，81~90分是4级，70~80是3级，60~69是2级，60分以下1级。大部分大学都会要求学生的ESL成绩达到3级以上。

ESL课程可以分为强化课程(Intensive ESL)与学术课程(Academic ESL)两种，学生在顺利通过ESL考试或没有取得雅思、托福等语言成绩之前所学习的ESL课程是强化课程，许多私立中学或大学都会提供。通过ESL考试之后或者已取得达到要求的托福或雅思语言成绩之后继续学习的ESL课程是学术课程，这种课程是由大学为本校的国际学生开设的，便于其进行专业学习的课程。

虽然无论是ESL强化课程还是学术课程都包括听说读写四部分，但是强化课程和学术课程对这些能力有不同的偏重。强化课程更偏向于听、说能力，学术课程则偏向于读、写能力。学习强化课程不用计入学分，相对没有太大压力，学习内容和学习方式也比较有趣。强化课程常常没有固定的教材，老师可以更为自由地安排教学内容，使其更贴近学生的生活，生动有趣。
